Alcoa Recycling Celebrates America Recycles Day in Knoxville, TN

IMGP3689 Alcoa Recycling participated in Knoxville's America Recycles Day (ARD) event that took place on Friday, November 14 in downtown Knoxville.  At this event, Alcoa Recycling provided a table to supply information about Alcoa's various recycling initiatives. 

Distributing recycling bins within the community is one key component to help people choose to recycle in their daily lives.  Over 160 custom made Alcoa recycling bins were given away to event attendees who signed pledge cards that signified their personal commitment to recycle. Each recyling bin was accompanied with the latest edition of a local recycling guide, which was provided by the Knoxville Recycling Coalition to helIMGP3702p inform people of where they can take which recyclables in their respective communities.   

The National Recycling Coalition started America Recycles Day 11 years ago to help educate people about the importance of recycling and to encourage people to increase their recycling habits both in the home and at work.

Other participating organizations for this event included the Knoxville Recycling Coalition, City of Knoxville, Knox County, Keep Knoxville Beautiful, University of Tennessee, and Waste Connections

Alcoa Recycling Teams Up with Univ. of TN for Tailgate Recycling

On Saturday, November 8 Alcoa volunteers teamed up with the University of Tennessee in Knoxville to help with tailgate recycling on campus before the home football game against Wyoming. 

Alcoa volunteers were dispersed throughout campus to assist with educating people aboDSC06735ut proper recycling practices, reducing the amount of trash entering the recycling bins, and diverting recyclables from going into the trash containers.  University of Tennessee's Environmental Coordinator, Jay Price, commented that campus had never looked so clean after a game--thanks in part to our volunteers!

UT's tailgate recycling program is part of the school's 'Make Orange Green' campaign that is designed to reduce the environmental impact on campus.  Visit UT's Recycling page to learn more.

Based on today’s London Metal Exchange market, the retail price for used beverage cans is $.15-.20 per pound.  The day’s wholesale price for mills is ranging from $.45-.49 per pound.  The retail price refers to the amount charged to store customers, such as at a scrap metal buy-back center.  The wholesale price describes the amount paid by large sheet mills buying large quantities of used beverage cans.

Knoxville's America Recycles Day Celebration, Nov. 14 in Downtown Knoxville

Knoxville's America Recycles Day celebration will take place tomorrow on Friday, November 14 from 11am-2pm on Market Sqaure in downtown Knoxville. 

America Recycles Day occurs annually on a national basis with the goal of enhancing public awareness about the importance of recycling as well as providing information about local recycling opportunities. 

The participating organizations for this event-- Knoxville Recycling Coalition, AlcoaCity of Knoxville, Knox County, Keep Knoxville Beautiful, University of Tennessee, Waste Connections, and Green Mountain Coffee-- will provide helpful information about ways people can start recycling in their daily lives, how each organization plays a part in community recycling, and why it's worthwhile to squeeze recycling into your busy lifestyles.

At this year's event you will have the opportunity to receive a recycling bin upon signing a pledge card to signify your commitment to increase recycling habits at home and work.  Compost bins and rain barrels will be given away to a few lucky winners.  And, there will be loads of information on how YOU can get started recycling!

SERDC's First-Ever Recycling Summit

The Southeast Recycling Development Council (SERDC) will hold its first ever Recycling Summit in Point Clear, Alabama from November 12-14, 2008.  This summit will focus on discussing recycling as a sustainable practice and economic generator.  Workshops, educational sessions, and networking options will be available for attendees to learn more about recycling trends in the southeast and how recycling programs can be improved.  Southeast recyclers, environmental executives, and policy makers will be among the participants in this summit.  Learn more from the conference website
