Award-Winning System Helps Monitor Employee Health
|
 |
 |
An award-winning electronic monitoring system to help ensure compliance with required annual medical evaluations is but one aspect of Alcoa-Köfém's efforts to protect and improve the health of its 3,000 employees.
Hungarian law requires annual employee medical evaluations, but enforcing compliance was often difficult. In 2005, Alcoa-Köfém co-created a software program to electronically monitor compliance on an individual level.
Full-time and temporary employees who do not schedule and receive an annual medical evaluation by their required date are flagged in the security system when they swipe their identification badge at the plant entrance. They then are denied access to the facility until the evaluation is completed. The system gives each employee a warning six weeks before the evaluation deadline. It also ensures no one but the facility's medical staff has access to confidential health information.
In 2006, Alcoa-Köfém achieved 100% compliance with all required medical evaluations for the first time. This earned the electronic monitoring project the 2006 Healthy Workplace Award in the best practices category from the Hungarian chapter of the American Chamber of Commerce.
It was the third Healthy Workplace Award the location received in as many years, primarily due to a broad spectrum of Alcoa health-related programs and activities that include the following:
- 24-hour emergency service;
- Trained first aid responders;
- Distribution of health education material on weight control, healthy eating, cancer prevention, and more;
- An employee assistance program;
- Free medical screenings, including cholesterol, allergies, and cardiology; and
- Organized programs for smoking cessation, exercise, mental health, and weight loss.
Alcoa-Köfém is also implementing programs to achieve Alcoa's global health goals. Between January 2004 and December 2005—the last completed metrics cycle—the location's eight business units achieved an average noise reduction of 3%, a 65% reduction in significant ergonomic risks, and a 67% reduction in chemical hazards. The goal for reduction in noise hazards remains a challenge due to costs involved.
Alcoa-Köfém also takes its health promotion activities outside the workplace through membership in various health promotion organizations throughout Hungary and Europe and sponsorship of community health events.
