Requesting a Grant for a U.S.-Based Not-For-Profit Community Organization
Alcoa Foundation awards grants to not-for-profit public charities in the U.S. in communities where Alcoa has a presence. Local Alcoans work and live in those communities; therefore, they are well positioned to recommend grant requests to Alcoa Foundation for funding. Not-for-profit organizations located in Alcoa communities must work with the local Alcoa facility nearest to them. A grant application may not be submitted directly to Alcoa Foundation without the support of the local Alcoa grant contact. Before approaching the local Alcoa facility with a grant request or proposal, please review Alcoa Foundation's Giving Guidelines and Areas of Excellence using the links to the left. For all grant inquiries, it is recommended that a concept paper -- see the section below -- be submitted via e-mail to the local Alcoa grant contact or to Alcoa Foundation before a formal grant proposal is prepared. The concept paper will be reviewed by the Alcoa location contact or by an Alcoa Foundation staff member, and they will contact the organization. An Alcoa location contact may ask an organization to prepare a concept paper in one of twoways:
- Using the standard format detailed below; the organization will e-mail the completed concept paper to the local Alcoa contact; or
- Using a location-specific format which may include instructions reflecting the location’s priorities under the Areas of Excellence; the organization will e-mail the completed concept paper to the local Alcoa contact.
In addition to the concept paper, you may be asked to submit a Project Budget for your program or project. If the local Alcoa contact is interested in the proposed project, a discussion will be initiated with the organization in order to agree on the specific project and grant amount which will be recommended for funding to Alcoa Foundation. Once agreement is reached on these items and all other details of the grant request, the organization will be given specific instructions on how to submit an on-line application to Alcoa Foundation. The submission of a concept paper does not guarantee funding from Alcoa or Alcoa Foundation. Concept Paper Format The following information must be provided in any concept paper which is submitted to a local Alcoa facility:
- Complete organization and contact information including name, address, phone, email and non-for-profit status of the organization as determined by the Internal Revenue Service
- Description – purpose, population group(s) targeted and anticipated results; this project or grant purpose will need to be agreed upon with the local Alcoa contact before an on-line application may be submitted
- Area of Excellence and Community Need to be Addressed – Alcoa Foundation’s Area of Excellence matched with known community needs
- Total Amount Requested - this amount will need to be agreed upon with the local Alcoa contact before an on-line application may be submitted
The concept paper should not exceed two pages. Payment of Approved Grants Alcoa Foundation makes all grant payments via Electronic Funds Transfer directly into the bank account of the funded organization. This process increases disbursement efficiency and improves security.
