Costa Rica's Sustainable Coffee
Coffee is one of the most important agricultural commodities, supporting the livelihoods of an estimated 100 million people in developing countries. Field research has revealed that shade-grown coffee, grown under more natural, forest-like conditions, can be beneficial to the ecology of local animals. Alexandre Borges (São Luís, Brazil) and Vivienne Talbot (Geneva, Switzerland) will help conduct a series of field experiments to determine the importance of shade-tree diversity on the abundance of pollinating insects and fruit-eating birds. July 28-August 11
