Our ABS Center of Excellence opened its doors to our first group of students on November 6. The North America Center of Excellence, housed in Building 800C, will train all levels of Alcoa management in the use of the seven stability tools of ABS.
The training will be both classroom and practical for a total of three weeks, which will be taken separately during a 12-month period.
"I'm very proud to open the ABS Center of Excellence here at Alcoa Davenport," said Helmut Wieser, Executive Vice President, Alcoa, Group President, Global Mill Products. "We will start the Center today with 20 people and in a year's time we will train about 300 Alcoans from across the world. The students will be here in the classroom, and then they will go across the street and be in a world-class manufacturing facility."
Those students will learn first hand about the skills necessary to implement ABS in a manufacturing environment. The school will standardize this learning process for all Alcoa locations.
"It's not just about learning the ABS Stability Tools, but it's going back and delivering those learnings to the plants and making it work," said John Carter, Global ABS Director for Global Rolled
Products, Hard Alloy Extrusions & Asia Group.
"If we successfully deploy what you are learning at the Center of Excellence in your plants and you
deepen your knowledge of the ABS tools, then no competitor can beat us," said Wieser.
This will be the first of three centers, with the other two in Europe and Asia opening by the end of next year.
