Alcoa Lancaster to Break Ground on New Rail Spur
Lancaster, Pennsylvania -- July 27, 2007 -- Alcoa Lancaster announced that groundbreaking on a new $2.4 million Rail Spur took place at the Lancaster Plant today. Construction of the approximately 300 ft. of single line and 500 ft. of parallel line mile in length rail spur will begin immediately and is expected to be operational by January 2008. The rail spur will connect to the Norfolk Southern Rail line. This is the first major construction project at Alcoa Lancaster since 1997.
Attending the groundbreaking ceremony will be Pennsylvania State Representative John Bear of the 97th District and Alcoa Lancaster management.
Installation of the Rail Spur will help alleviate local truck traffic by removing about 5,000 trucks a year from local roads, which aids in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
“Besides this community benefit, the addition of the Rail Spur will reduce transit time for rolling ingot by about two days, supporting Alcoa’s effort to continuously improve customer delivery performance and maintain our competitiveness in the aluminum business,” said Roy Dirkmaat, Vice President and General Manager for Alcoa Lancaster. Currently, Alcoa Lancaster’s shipped based on-time delivery is 95.9%.
The design of the rail spur was engineered by Rettew Associates Inc. and the general contractor for the construction is B.R. Kreider, Manheim.
Alcoa Lancaster employs 860 people who contribute to the local community. Products made from the aluminum produced at Lancaster are shipped worldwide include parts for the computer industry, cookware, transportation parts, appliance panels, tooling plate and numerous items for the home.
